The countryside is a blend of colours and scents typical of this land. The green of the vineyards, the ocher of the "Crete Senesi", make Val d'Orcia the ideal place for bike excursions and horseriding. The Natural Park offers a lot of opportunities for bird watching, photograpy, lake fishing in the nearby Montepulciano and Chiusi. The tasting of the wines, of the Pienza cheese and of the extravirgin olive oil provide a thorough knowledge of this splendid land.
Pienza is an open air museum. Tourists should not miss a visit to the Cathedral, the Pio II Square, the Piccolomini Town Hall, the City Museum and the Sacred tapestries. Close to Pienza there lies Monticchiello, a charming Medieval village, the seat of the famous "Poor Theatre". Not far away from Pienza, the aristocratic Montepulciano, the well-known Montalcino Fortress and S.Antimo Monastery, where Benedectine Monks celebrate the Service with Gregorian Chants daily, are really worth visiting.
Pienza History starts a long time ago, back to the 7th when it was a Sienese citadel called Corsignano Castle, wich is mentioned in one of Boccaccio's tales. In 1460 Pope Pio II wanted the place to become an "Ideal City", a Renaissance artwork. Architect Bernardo Rossellino was commissioned with the project and in about ten years he realized this perfect example of Renaissance Town planning. Pienza was numbered among UNESCO Worldwide Property in 1996.
